Alf Årdal has his degrees in violin and conducting from the Norwegian Academy of Music, Oslo.
He started his professional career as violinist in the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra
After further conducting studies with Otmar Suitner and Herbert Blomstedt, he has worked with all the professional orchestras in Norway and has also led several productions at the Norwegian Opera and Ballet.
He has been guest-conducting in Scandinavia, England, Germany, Switzerland and South-Korea, and conducts CD-recordings on Simax and BIS. His transcriptions for string orchestra of the two string quartets by Edvard Grieg are recorded on Naxos.
He was artistic director of Sinfonia Uranienborg 2006 – 2012, and 2008 – 2014 he conducted project orchestras at the MenuhinFestival in Gstaad, Switzerland.
Årdal has made transcriptions / arrangements for symphony orchestra, chamber orchestra (string orchestra) and wind ensemble.
Ensembles that have comisioned and/or performed his transcriptions are The Trondheim Soloists, English Chamber Orchestra, Oslo Camerata, Hardanger Music Festival, Värmlandsoperaen (Sweden), Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra, The Cellists of the Oslo Philharmonic, The Norwegian Wind Ensemble and The Norwegian Military Bands – and among soloists are Solveig Kringelborn, Vilde Frang and Truls Mörk.
CD-recording of Griegs two string quartets (performed by Oslo Camerata) is released by Naxos
«Lyrical Pieces» by Grieg (performed by Barratt Due Junior Orchestra) is released by Hemera,
«Urlicht» from Mahler’s Symphony no. 2 – transcribed for solocello, 12 cellists and double bass – is performed by the cellists of the Oslo Philharmonics Orchestra on their CD «Erlik Cello» with Truls Mörk as soloist.
